AMS/NWA conference in Dodge City, KS

I was glad to “get the heck outta Dodge” today despite the lovely stench of cattle and feed yards.  As a member of the nerdery which is the High Plains Chapter of the American Meteorological Society and National Weather Association, I got to partake in the annual conference held this week (4th-6th) in Dodge City, KS.  There were about 50 people who attended, and it really was quite fun since 7 people from our Goodland office came to the conference.  There were a lot of great presentations and talks from fellow weather nerds and I was able to meet a lot of people from surrounding Weather Service offices.  Dr. Paul Markowski (Penn State), Dr. David Schultz (CIMMS/NSSL), and Dr. Erik Rasmussen (CIMMS/NSSL) were the keynote speakers and then fellow members gave shorter presentations.  I presented my Red Flag Climatology Study that I have been working on the past several months. The presentation went well with no hiccups, and it seemed well-received.  The conference wrapped up today at noon, and we got back into Goodland about 4pm.  I’m pretty tired from the late nights socializing in Dodge, but I’m excited because tomorrow I’m driving to Denver to catch a flight for ABQ to see Margie.  We were hoping to see the first few events of the Balloon Fiesta this weekend, but a monstrous trough will be overtaking the Southwest and it may rain most of the time that I’m there.  Oh well, maybe I’ll get some lightning pics.
