august 23rd lightning…

A spectacular lightning show was on display over the greater Albuquerque area on Monday.  I was too busy fiddling with grilling dinner, so I only managed to snag a few shots from the back porch.  I missed out on some really great opportunities with the sun setting behind translucent rain shafts among several lightning strikes. Here’s a couple of strikes that I did manage to capture from the back porch shortly after dusk.

star trails…

After several unsuccessful attempts of catching a meteor on camera during the recent Perseids meteor shower, I eventually turned to taking longer exposures. This was a 30 minute exposure at night, capturing the movement of stars relative to the earth, or star trails as time elapsed. This was actually taken in Angel Fire, NM this past weekend on a getaway with the family. The silhouette of pine trees in a perfectly calm wind over the 30 minute exposure time is visible as the foreground.

Rio Grande Gorge…

After a weekend getaway in Angel Fire, Margie and I took a short detour to the upper Rio Grande where U.S. Highway 64 crosses via the Rio Grande Gorge bridge. This is quite an impressive feature, and here are a few of the views seen from the bridge.

early morning lightning…

These were technically taken on the 5th of August, since it was after midnight.  Residual outflow boundaries and perhaps some kind of impulse aloft kept these storms going until just before sunrise.  Although there wasn’t much substance with these, they did produce the occasional jaw-dropping cloud to ground strike.  Here’s a few of the keepers with the exception of the fourth image…that one was the most photogenic strike of the night, but I was obviously not in focus.  DOH!!
