elk in the Valles Caldera…

I took a quick jaunt into the Jemez mountains with some friends last week, and came across the Valles Caldera National Preserve where we spotted a huge herd of elk.  I would estimate close to 100 were in the herd, but it was difficult to confirm.  I was never able capture the full herd within a single shot, because they were spread apart and moving at a fairly brisk pace.  I used my telephoto lens, but they were still at least 200 yards away from me at their closest.  Here’s my favorite shots.

more Maui images…

I have finally finished sorting through the remaining pictures from Maui.  I took hundreds, but will just post a few of my favorites.  Most of these were taken during the latter half of our 8 day trip.

Maui…the first 3 and a half days

Thus far, our stay in Maui has been AMAZING!!!  Parasailing, snorkeling, waterfalls, blowholes, caves, lava tubes, and the Haleakala National Park were included on our first three and a half days.  Here’s some images.

A blowhole near the northernmost point in Maui. East northeast trade winds drive waves into the lava rock forming the coastline and erode "blowholes" where sudden rises in water and pressure levels create abrupt spewing of ocean water through the holes.
